For years now, our family (Karin, Pim, Marloes and Wessel Bottenberg from the Netherlands) have been taking vacations in Kenya. In 2004, we became friends with the Onoo family: Joan, Moses and their children Titus, Sammy and Sarah. They live a little ways outside Mombassa in an 8-family compound in Shanzu. Until 2003, the Onoo family lived in the strife-ridden province of Katakwa near the Ugandan border.

Before the beach name project started, Moses worked as a night watchman at a hotel at the minimum wage of 2250 Kenyan shillings per month (approximately € 25 / US$ 35) for 25 twelve-hour nights.

Working together

In 2006, both families decided to start some kind of business in Kenya, preferably on the Internet, since we have a lot of experience with that. We explored the idea of hand-written beach names. There was much for Moses and Joan to learn. Operating the digital cameras (Moses looked long and hard for the roll of film), memory card, uploading files, e-mailing, chatting, faxing ... they love the new digital world.

Results

Everything we hoped for has come true. Not only do Moses and Joan have work and income; their entire compound in Shanzu (8 families) are working and earning money from all the work involved in preparing the beach, making and finishing the names and photos.

It is always a bit scary to place orders via the Internet, but I thought this was so great. It all went perfectly and the result was beautiful. I have since ordered 5.
